I blogged last year about the incomparable pairing of Ian Dempsey and Ray D'Arcy on Today FM. Ian and Ray are Ireland's two best radio presenters (don't make me pick which of them is #1!)
Imagine my surprise then when it was announced that Ray has left Today FM and will be rejoining RTE. He is going to present an afternoon (3 PM) show on RTE Radio 1 starting on the 2nd of February. Apparently he's going to do TV work too.
I think the 9 AM slow on Today FM worked well with Ray presenting. I remain to be convinced that a 3 PM slow will work as well.
This is a HUGE blow for Today FM. I hope they will be able to recover from it.

Christmas FM
I can't believe I am only blogging about this now!
Every year we listed to Christmas FM (or "XMAS FM" as it appears on the car radio) and every year I blog about it.
This year we were listening to the test transmission before it even started transmitting officially!
And last week I had occasion to travel to Killarney and Cork so I was able to listen to the channel:

Ray 'Arcy
I mentioned Ian Dempsey in a recent post and his long and remarkable contribution to breakfast radio in Ireland. But I also need to pay tribute to his colleagues Ray D'arcy.
Ian broadcasts on Today FM on weekdays from 7 to 9 AM, and he is then followed by Ray who takes over from 9 to midday.
Between them they make an unbeatable pairing.
When I am working from home, it is fair to say that Today FM will be playing in our home up until midday thanks to these two guys.
Ray and his team organised the "Half Million Half Marathon" for LauraLynn, which is Ireland's Children's Hospice, which was run this morning. Ray, Jenny (his wife) and Mairead all ran in the event.
Well done to them all!

The Fantastic Ian Dempsey
In this blog posting and the next I want to salute two great servants of Ireland.
The first is the fantastic radio DJ Ian Dempsey (known as "Iano" to all and sundry).
I was switched on to Ian's fabulous breakfast show by my wife. She's a huge fan.
What impresses me most is how "up" he is every morning.
And then (back in October of last year) Today FM had a "This is your life"-type celebration to mark 25 years of Ian presenting the breakfast show (more).
How anyone can present a breakfast show for 25 years, and still be so cheerful, is a mystery to me.
So hats off to Iano.

It's here again!
On Thursday last (28th November) at 8AM, Christmas FM began broadcatsing for 2013.
And we were all tuned in and waiting.
The station broadcasts on 94.3 in Dublin and other frequencies around the country.
And world-wide on the Internet.
The charity this year is Aware which is an extremely worthwhile cause. You can donate €2 by texting a dedication to 50300. You need to include "xmas" followed by your message. All of the money goes to the charity.
Now we're really in the Christmas spirit!

Heard on an Arts programme on the radio this evening
The host asked the panellists wrt the lyrics of a song: "Is this clever, or is it too clever?"
No, seriously.
Perhaps he was really asking a question about his own question!
Reminds me of a wonderful sketch on "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" where the host and panellist discussed how many levels a sketch worked on! You can see it here:

I can't believe that I failed to blog about one of the other great things about Christmas: Christmas FM!
Christmas FM broadcasts Christmas music for 30 days, closing down again on St Stephen's Day.
You can listen to it in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Wexford. And you can listen to it on the web.
I spotted it on my dial the day before it started broadcasting and I was tuned in at 8:20 in my car on the first morning. It really puts you in the Christmas mood.
And it's run by volunteers and all money raised this year goes to ISPCC Childline.
